Reportage: Blowing Up Balloons

There are many traditions that New Yorkers get to participate in which are by nature exclusive due to geography. Sometimes the rest of the world looks on, like at the Christmas Tree lighting in Rockefeller Center, or the Dropping of the Ball in Times Square. But there is one that is reserved for the few who are willing to treck out in the cold and rain, the blowing up of the balloons for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It's a family affair to be sure, with kids in strollers, and on their fathers shoulders, looks of amazement abound.

Honey Cake (Lekach)

Wet Ingredients
3 Eggs
1 Cup Honey
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Warm Strong Coffee
1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil
1/4 Cup Whiskey
2 Teaspoons Vanilla

Dry Ingredients
2 Teaspoons Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
1 Teaspoon Nutmeg
1 Teaspoon Allspice
1 Teaspoon Ground Cloves
2.5 Cups Flour
1/3 Cup Raisins
1/3 Cup Orange Peel
1/3 Cup Walnuts

(Raisins, Orange Peel, Nuts & Whiskey are optional and can be used together, just one ingredient or omitted altogether depending on your taste.)

Preheat oven to 350 F

Beat the eggs together with honey, then add vanilla and mix in sugar.

Add coffee and pour into egg mixture together with oil.

In a separate bowl mix all dry ingredients.

Join the contents of the two bowls and mix well. Then stir in remaining ingredients.

Pour into a rectangular loaf pan.

Bake at 350 F for about an hour.

Reportage: ING New York City Marathon

These images were from the 2009 ING New York City Marathon. I shot them around the 81st St. entrance to Central Park, in the shoot after the finish. The last image is of a runner after completing the course in a time of 3:11, and yes, he's smoking a cigarette. (kids, don't try that at home)

Reportage: Market in Jerusalem

This is one of my favorite images from a recent two week trip to Israel. The image was taken at the famed Shuk (market) in Jerusalem. It strikes me for so many reasons, and tells so many stories, but in the end speaks to the community that exists. Call it diverse if you must, but to me it just goes to show that Israel is just like New York, just like London, but still remains its own, magical place.

This is one of my few unpublished images left from my last trip to Cinque Terra, Italia. It was shot on Fuji Chrome (slide film) and processed normally.

Restaurant: Fresh.

My good friend Brandon Glasser, and his family have opened up a fantastic restaurant in Basking Ridge called Fresh. Their Mission is: "At Fresh we offer artisanal hand- made foods supported by a community of local farmers, purveyors, bakers and coffee roasters. We make all of out food from scratch, using locally grown ingredients whenever possible." Thats a big fancy way of saying they make awesome homemade food.

Party: Le Cirque Halloween

This Halloween was one of the most fun that i've had in a long time, if ever. My friend Morgan Miller photographer and promoter extraordinaire has done the imposible, turned the renowned Le Cirque Restaurant into the the most exclusive party in NYC.
