This summer, as part of the Summer Streets program, the DOT closed Park Ave to vehicular traffic for a few hours over 3 Saturdays. Artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer took advantage of this and set up an installation called Voice Tunnel in the Park Ave Tunnel between 33rd and 40th streets. This is the first time the tunnel has been open to pedestrians in it's 300 year history. Though the line was blocks and blocks long it moved quickly, was perfectly organized, and well worth the wait. Lozano-Hemmer used theatrical lights spaced seven feet apart each with a speaker to create the installation. In the center of the tunnel a call box records the visitors message and repeats it out towards the ends with light intensity to match the recording. To me, part of the appeal was being able to slowly walk through a space that I've only ever seen flying by in a cab.

While at the DuPage Country Fair I got tickets for the demolition derby. Special thanks to Nicky at International Demolition Derby who let me down into the pit to shoot.
